How to Clean a Pool Filter?
How to Clean a Pool Filter
At Same Day Pool Service, we understand that keeping your pool filter clean is essential for maintaining crystal-clear water and a healthy swimming environment. A clean filter ensures proper circulation and filtration, preventing dirt and debris from accumulating in your pool. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean different types of pool filters.
Types of Pool Filters
Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s important to identify the type of filter you have:
- Sand Filters
- Cartridge Filters
- Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filters
Cleaning a Sand Filter
Step 1: Backwash the Filter
- Locate the multiport valve on your filter.
- Set it to "Backwash" and turn on the pump. This will reverse the flow of water and flush out trapped debris.
- Run the pump for about 2-3 minutes or until the water in the sight glass runs clear.
- Turn off the pump and set the valve back to "Filter."
Step 2: Rinse the Filter
- Change the multiport valve to the "Rinse" setting.
- Turn on the pump again for about 30 seconds to rinse the system. This will help remove any remaining debris from the filter.
Step 3: Check the Pressure
- After rinsing, monitor the pressure gauge. If it’s above the normal operating range, it may be time to clean or replace the sand.
Cleaning a Cartridge Filter
Step 1: Remove the Cartridge
- Turn off the pool pump.
- Release any pressure by opening the air relief valve.
- Remove the cartridge from the filter housing according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 2: Rinse the Cartridge
- Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to thoroughly rinse the cartridge. Focus on the pleats to remove dirt and debris.
- For a deeper clean, soak the cartridge in a mixture of water and filter cleaner (follow the product instructions) for several hours or overnight.
Step 3: Reinstall the Cartridge
- After rinsing or soaking, let the cartridge dry completely.
- Reinstall it back into the filter housing and ensure it’s securely in place.
Cleaning a Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filter
Step 1: Backwash the Filter
- Set the multiport valve to "Backwash" and run the pump for about 2-3 minutes until the water in the sight glass runs clear.
Step 2: Clean the DE Grids
- Turn off the pump and remove the filter lid to access the DE grids.
- Rinse each grid with a garden hose to remove debris.
- Soak the grids in a cleaning solution designed for DE filters, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 3: Reassemble and Recharge with DE
- After rinsing, reassemble the filter.
- Recharge the filter with fresh DE powder according to your filter’s specifications.
Final Steps
Check the Pressure Gauge
After cleaning your filter, turn on the pool pump and check the pressure gauge. If it’s significantly lower than before cleaning, that’s normal. However, if it’s too high, you may need to backwash again or assess your filter’s condition.
Regular Maintenance
To keep your pool filter functioning optimally, establish a routine cleaning schedule:
- Sand Filters: Backwash every 4-6 weeks or when the pressure gauge indicates.
- Cartridge Filters: Clean every 3-6 months or as needed, depending on usage.
- DE Filters: Backwash and recharge with DE powder as needed, typically every 4-6 weeks.
